James E. Duffy, Jr. served as an Associate Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court from 2003-June 1, 2012. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, Justice Duffy was a founding member of the firm Fujiyama, Duffy and Fujiyama, a practicing trial lawyer for 35 years, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in diverse matters, including professional liability, products liability, personal injury, commercial, business and general civil matters.
In addition, in his practice years, Justice Duffy also served as a mediator, arbitrator and special master in well over 300 matters, including business, commercial, real estate, insurance, employment, labor, trust, probate, tort, products liability, personal injury and professional liability.
Justice Duffy is a past President of the Hawaii State Bar Association, and is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. Justice Duffy received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Hawaii State Bar Association, a Life-time Achievement Award from the Consumer Lawyers of Hawaii, the John S. Edmunds Award for Civility and Vigorous Advocacy, and the C. Frederick Schutte Award for outstanding contribution to the legal community and the profession.
Justice Duffy is a graduate of the College of St. Thomas and Marquette University Law School (1968) where he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Marquette Law Review.
On a personal note, Justice Duffy is married, with 2 children and 2 grandchildren. He is an avid horseman and presently serves as a Director of the Paniolo Preservation Society.
