An accomplished neutral and member of the San Francisco-based law firm of Severson & Werson, P.C. since 2002, Joel L. Halverson offers a wealth of experience in resolving civil claims in a wide variety of contexts and disciplines. Having worked closely with many of the world’s most esteemed dispute resolution professionals, Mr. Halverson represents a new generation of talented and effective mediators, implementing time-tested and successful resolution techniques with his own, fresh approach to efficiently and fairly resolve disputes.
Mr. Halverson has over 15 years of significant experience in ADR and as a neutral, having settled numerous civil disputes involving a wide variety of substantive issues through mediation, as Settlement Conference Officer with the San Francisco Superior Court, as Settlement Panelist with the Marin County Superior Court and as arbitrator.
Working part-time as a neutral (mediator and arbitrator), Mr. Halverson also maintains a thriving private practice which allows him to stay attuned to the latest developments in the law and the various industries he serves. Substantively, his practice has focused on design and construction, real estate, professional liability (including medical and legal malpractice disputes), insurance (including coverage-related disputes and extensive work with domestic and foreign carriers, including Europe and Asia), labor and employment (including class action “wage and hour” claims), maritime and admiralty, Native American sovereignty, products liability, financial services, bankruptcy, and sports and athletics. Mr. Halverson also has extensive experience with transactional and risk management counseling, serving as general counsel to a number of private firms and providing advice with respect to a wide variety of business contracts and disputes.
Having worked in the construction industry for nearly 30 years (including working in the trades before entering law school), Mr. Halverson brings true industry expertise to design and construction disputes. He has represented virtually every participant in the design and construction processes (owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, insurers, manufacturers, lenders, architects, engineers, land surveyors, geologists, etc.) and has been named among the “Best Lawyers in the Bay Area” for construction. Mr. Halverson has resolved claims arising from virtually all kinds of construction and design projects and issues, ranging from the simple remodeling job gone awry to copyright disputes to multi-million dollar delay and disruption claims on international projects such as liquid natural gas facilities.
Mr. Halverson has considerable trial experience, including cases with high-dollar claims arising out of multi-family housing developments and wrongful death. He is a frequent lecturer on legal topics and has made television news appearances as a legal expert. He obtained his J.D. (1994) from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and his B.A. (1990), cum laude, from Pomona College.
Mr. Halverson is available to mediate or arbitrate civil disputes of all sizes and complexities out of his own offices in San Francisco or Irvine, California, or in other locales of the parties’ choosing, including each of the Hawaiian Islands.
