Jeffrey S. Portnoy is a graduate of the Duke University School of Law. He previously served as Chair of Cades Schutte’s Litigation Department, and has practiced law as a civil litigator at the firm since 1972.

During Mr. Portnoy’s legal career, he has gained extensive litigation and ADR background in several areas of substantive law, including insurance, employment, product liability, media, commercial, and professional errors and omissions. He has tried, to verdict, more than twenty-five cases, and has served as an arbitrator and/or mediator in cases ranging from medical malpractice to construction disputes.

He has been selected as one of the Best Lawyers in America, has served as a lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, and was Chairman of the United States District Court Advisory (Biden) Committee. He was also selected to serve as a Hawaii State per diem court judge by Chief Justice Moon.

Mr. Portnoy has written several articles for legal publications, including Media Law in Hawaii. He has served as a speaker at numerous state and mainland legal seminars in areas ranging from employment law to insurance issues. He presently serves as the Hawaii State representative to the Defense Research Institute.

Mr. Portnoy has been the recipient of several national and local awards, including receiving the Society of Professional Journalists First Amendment Award.
