Duane R. Miyashiro is an experienced civil litigator with more than 30 years of practice representing businesses, fiduciaries, and individuals in complex disputes. His practice spans admiralty and maritime law, aviation-related matters, commercial and business litigation, real estate disputes, insurance, and trust litigation, including high-exposure and technically complex cases. He has been involved in a wide range of mediations and settlement conferences as an advocate, where he works with clients to explore practical and constructive resolutions. He also has trial and arbitration experience representing clients in both prosecuting and defending claims.
Mr. Miyashiro has also developed focused experience in employment-related disputes, supported by his recent completion of mediation certification from Cornell University’s ILR School. He has served as a court-appointed arbitrator in numerous civil matters, where he is recognized for his thorough preparation, sound judgment, and practical, solutions-oriented approach.
He has been consistently recognized for his professional excellence, including selection to Best Lawyers in America and Hawaiʻi Super Lawyers for his work in commercial, real estate, and trust litigation. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Miyashiro served as a patrol officer with the Honolulu Police Department, an experience that continues to inform his disciplined, fact-driven approach as a neutral.
He has served in significant public decision-making roles, including as Chair of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and Vice-Chair of the Honolulu Liquor Commission, where he participated in policy development, evaluated licensing applications, and rendered determinations in regulatory and enforcement matters. He currently serves on the Disciplinary Board of the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court, where he is involved in the evaluation and regulation of professional conduct matters.
Mr. Miyashiro is admitted to practice in all Hawaiʻi courts, before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa.
