The Honorable Judge Elizabeth A. Strance retired from the bench after fifteen years of service and returned to private practice as Of Counsel with Cades Schutte, LLP. She first served as a per diem judge in the District and Family Courts and subsequently completed a ten year term as a circuit court judge. As a circuit court judge, she presided over a comprehensive calendar that included civil cases such as

    • construction litigation
    • boundary and title disputes
    • lease rent renegotiation litigation
    • foreclosures
    • mechanics’ liens
    • medical malpractice
    • motor vehicle personal injury
    • real estate breach of contract claims
    • probate and trust disputes.

As a practicing attorney, Judge Strance has been a partner in both large and small law firms. Her practice has included civil litigation as well as business and real estate transactions.

Throughout her career, Judge Strance has been a strong advocate of alternative dispute resolution. She believes a case should not proceed to trial unless all efforts to resolve the case have been exhausted. To that end, as judge, she routinely referred cases to mediation and encouraged arbitration. In addition, she worked diligently and successfully to resolve cases during settlement conferences.

Judge Strance obtained her Juris Doctorate from Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College. Her undergraduate degrees are from Willamette University in Public Policy and Political Science.

Judge Strance is a member of the American Bar Association, Hawaii State Bar Association, Oregon State Bar (inactive) and the West Hawaii Bar Association.
