In 34 years of Hawaii civil litigation practice, Mr. Grimmer has been lead attorney on 10 jury trials in all four Hawaii circuits and the United States District Court – Hawaii, as well as countless bench trials, binding arbitrations and mediations. He has also handled many appeals and made oral arguments in the Hawaii Supreme Court, Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Grimmer has served as a Hawaii CAAP arbitrator since the program’s inception. He is an efficient hearings officer and/or facilitator who moves things along tactfully and quickly to exchange of concrete positions.
Mr. Grimmer was born and raised in Hawaii and began his legal career in Carlsmith Ball’s Hilo office in 1976. After six years in Carlsmith’s Hilo and Kona offices, he moved to the Honolulu office in 1982, and recently established his own downtown Honolulu law firm. Mr. Grimmer knows and understands the cultural differences and nuances of Hawaii’s multi-racial and multi-national population. He knows how not to offend and develop trust among participants.
Mr. Grimmer recently concluded a three year term as an elected member of the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference Executive Committee. He previously served as a Court Appointed Hawaii Lawyer Representative to the Conference, and a Court invited attorney to the Hawaii State Judicial Conference and the Hawaii Federal Judicial Conference. He is or has been a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, American Judicature Society and a fund raiser for Legal Aid Society of Hawaii.
