Hon. Richard P. Guy retired from the Washington State Supreme Court in January of 2001 and resides in Honolulu. During his eleven years as a member of the Washington State Supreme Court and as Chief Justice he wrote more than 100 Supreme Court opinions. As a trial court judge in Spokane, Washington, Superior Court, Justice Guy conducted thousands of hearings and served as trial court judge in both criminal and civil matters as well as hearing juvenile court matters.
Prior to being appointed to the court, Justice Guy was a principal at the Spokane, WA, law firm of Winston and Cashatt where he conducted arbitrations for governmental units and labor organizations as well as being selected by local attorneys for that purpose. Justice Guy’s law practice included commercial law, corporate and banking law and bankruptcy law. His Mardindale-Hubbell rating is a-v.
In addition to teaching at the Washington State Judicial College and at many seminars, Justice Guy has studied biotechnology issues and is a presenter at national and international conferences on genetics and the law.
Since receiving his law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1959, Justice Guy has been an active participant in numerous professional and civic organizations including the Conference of Chief Justices, National Judicature Society, American Bar Association, Washington State Bar Association, Federal Bar Association Bankruptcy Division for Eastern Washington, and the American Arbitration Association.

Justice Guy has actively served as a neutral in mediation and arbitration services since February 2001. He completed courses in Mediation and Arbitration at the National Judicial College in 2000 and in Mediation Training at JAMS education and Training Services in 2001.
