James H. Lawhn, Esq. graduated from the University of Texas with a B.B.A. in Accounting in 1961, and an L.L.B in 1968. He is a member of the Bar in Hawaii and Texas (inactive), and is Of Counsel to the law firm of Oliver Lau Lawhn Ogawa & Nakamura.
Mr. Lawhn has practiced law in Hawaii for over 38 years. The majority of his experience has concentrated on representing contractors and sureties in construction defect cases; delay and disruption claims; defaults and terminations on private and public construction projects; payment and performance bond claims; and coverage disputes under commercial general liability policies of insurance.
Mr. Lawhn has served as a Mediator and/or an Arbitrator in numerous construction-related disputes. He has also represented construction industry clients in a wide range of mediation, arbitration and litigation proceedings in Hawaii and the Pacific Basin.
Mr. Lawhn is the author of the Hawaii chapters of the Payment Bond Manual, the Performance Bond Manual, The Law of Motor Vehicle Dealer Bonds and Contractor’s State License Bonds, all published by the American Bar Association. He also is a sponsor and panelist of the Western States Surety Association and has authored the Hawaii section of The Quick Reference Guide To Western States Surety Law. Mr. Lawhn serves as a member of the Distinguished Panel of Neutrals of Dispute Prevention & Resolution, Inc.; member of the Construction Industry Forum of the American Bar Association; and the Fidelity & Surety Division of the American Bar Association.
